Fortitude Award
The sculpture, Fortitude, located on the campus of Howard University, symbolizes the attributes of strength, courage, hope, wisdom, beauty, and femininity as depicted by the twenty-two Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
The figure is shown pushing forward as the tension of her thighs portrays strength. Her outstretched hands denote the receiving of love and the giving of one’s self to others. Her facial features depict courage and determination. Her color tones indicate the gradations of pigmentation of the African American woman.
The Jefferson County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, presents the Fortitude Award to a soror who best exemplifies the qualities as portrayed by our Founders. The Fortitude Award is presented biennially at our Founders Day Celebration.
